After starting as a fun diversion among college classmates in the fall of 2011, Modulation of the Day is still here, hunting and gathering tunes with key changes.

Most music fans adore innovative harmonies and chord progressions, which Pitchfork praises as components of a peak musical experience: a “harmonic dodge-and-feint … among the sweetest dopamine hits that music is capable of producing.” For many, key changes go a step further. But oddly, other than a few pop-centric playlists and online listicles, you won’t find a sizable collection of tunes with key changes, much less one which includes all eras and genres.
That’s where we come in.
Each weekday we consider, categorize, and celebrate one modulating tune. For anyone hoping to sharpen their musical ear, we point out the exact spot in each track where the key change happens. In the process, we provide some analysis of the music theory at work — but generally avoid a full technical breakdown. We hope to be a confluence point where pure love of music, interest in music theory, and openness to music from familiar and new genres and eras can meet.
Our regular visitors are K-12 music teachers looking to augment their lesson plans; academics in the music theory and musicology fields looking for a fun diversion during a coffee break; and plenty of garden-variety music lovers who search our collection by era, artist, or genre. We’ve received some wonderful thank-yous from artists whose tunes we’ve featured, as well as from our guest contributors who clearly feel the love after sharing their favorite music on this singular platform.
Dozens of guest contributors have joined our primary curators over the years; they’re credited in any way they wish, including “anonymous,” their BlueSky or Reddit handle, their full name, etc. We’re always seeking to expand our list of contributors, since many ears make for a more diverse listening community. So please share a tune if you have one in mind!
Thank you so much for being a part of Modulation of the Day.
