Bette Midler | Mambo Italiano

“Mambo Italiano” was originally written by Bob Merrill in 1954 for the American singer Rosemary Clooney, and is a parody of genuine mambo music. Bette Midler included a cover of the tune on her tribute album to Clooney, released in 2003 (following Clooney’s death in 2002) and produced by Barry Manilow. “I wanted to be respectful, but I felt we had to find something new to say as well,” Midler said in the liner notes for the album. “And in these (mostly) new arrangements…I believe we have.”

The track begins in G minor and shifts up a half step at 2:16.

Andra Day | What The World Needs Now

“Right now the world is full of opinions, which is always fine, and full of agendas and people making things out to be a certain way and they aren’t listening to each other,” Day said upon recording this 1965 Burt Bacharach song. “That requires love and that requires selflessness.” Day’s cover was used for Hyatt Hotels’ World of Hyatt campaign, and premiered in an ad during the 89th Academy Awards in 2017.

The track begins in A and shifts up to Bb at 1:54.

Green Day | Brutal Love

“Brutal Love” is the lead track on the 2012 album ¡Tré!, the third and final installment of a series released by the American rock band Green Day (who today make their MotD debut.) According to Billboard, the track “marries glam-rock, doo-wop and soul music. Part of the melody is lifted from Sam Cooke’s 1962 hit “Bring It On Home To Me,” leading him to be credited as a co-writer.

The song begins in Ab and modulates up to A coming out of the second bridge at 3:45.

Jean Claude and the Eclairs | Crazy For You

Jean Claude and the Eclairs is a Kansas City-based indie/ pop alternative band that has been active since 2018. The group, which includes Garrison Krotz, Quinn Maetzold, Ryan Pollock and Cooper Scott, will release its first EP next month. “Crazy For You” was released in 2018, and modulates from Ab up a half step to A at 2:30.

Kim Petras | Malibu

German singer Kim Petras describes her song Malibu, released in 2020, as a “pick-me-up song” with a “punchy mix of synth-bass squirts and tropical-funk guitar that lives up to its namesake.” The music video for the track features over a dozen artists, including Todrick Hall, Demi Lovato, and Jonathan Van Ness, and was filmed in isolation during the pandemic.

Starting in G, the tune shifts up to A at 1:58.

Mariah Carey (feat. Boyz II Men) | One Sweet Day

Written and released at the height of the AIDS epidemic, “One Sweet Day” is about the sadness of losing loved ones, regret about taking them for granted, and faith that we can be reunited in heaven. “When you lose people that are close to you,” Carey said discussing the message of the song, “it changes your life and changes our perspective.”

Co-written by Boyz II Men and Carey, the song originally appeared on Carey’s 1995 album Daydream. Widely praised by critics, it was the most successful single ever on the Billboard chart up to that point, sitting at the number 1 spot for a record 16 weeks. “On ‘One Sweet Day,'” wrote New York Times music critic Stephen Holden, “the singer joins forces with Boyz II Men, those masters of pleading post-doo-wop vocal harmonies for a tender eulogy that suggests that the singers have been personally touched by the AIDS crisis.” In a readers poll conduct by Rolling Stone, the track was heralded as the Best Collaboration of All Time.

Danny and Alex | Friends Kiss Too

“Friends Kiss Too” is a 2019 single released by Danny and Alex, a pop duo based in St. Petersburg, Florida. Counting Steely Dan, Prince, and The Beatles among their influences, [Danny] Scordato and [Alex] Merrill write and produce all of their music; they released an EP in 2018.

Shania Twain | Any Man of Mine

“Any Man of Mine” was country singer Shania Twain’s first number one hit, selling over 500,000 copies and topping the country charts. Co-written with Twain’s then-husband Robert John “Mutt” Lange, the track was originally featured on the 1995 album The Woman In Me, and was nominated for Best Country Song and Best Female Country Performance at the 1996 Grammy Awards. “Another Canadian singer breaking national borders and stylistic barriers,” said the British magazine Music Week of the song. “This debut single from the new album features hubby Mutt Lange’s crunching but considered rock production (and vocals) plus enough country to catch the ear.”

Parachute | What Side of Love

“What Side of Love” is featured on Wide Awake, the fourth studio album by the Virginia-based rock band Parachute, released in 2016. “While pleasing critics has never been Parachute’s M.O., they certainly know their way around big melodic hooks,” said critic Timothy Monger, reviewing the record for AllMusic. The gospel-tinged song was written by lead vocalist Will Anderson with James Flannigan and Sean Douglas. Starting in Bb, the tune shifts up to C at 2:45.
