Michael Medrano | Do Your Thing!

Michael Medrano is a Mexican-American singer, songwriter and producer who Billboard has called a “Pop Prince on the Rise.” His songs have amassed over 10 million streams on Spotify, and released his first mixtape, Lovesexdrugs, in 2023. “Do Your Thing!” was released as a single in 2020. The tune begins in F and shifts up a half step to Gb at 2:27.

What Dreams Are Made Of (from “The Lizzie McGuire Movie”)

Written by Dean Pitchford and Matthew Wilder, “What Dreams Are Made Of” is featured at the end of the 2003 Disney film The Lizzie McGuire Movie and performed by Hilary Duff. The disco-infused track begins in Eb and modulates up to E at 2:54.

David Lanz | Valentine Hill

American pianist and composer David Lanz has released dozens of albums, and this is the title track from his latest record, which came out last February. It begins in D minor, modulates very briefly up to Eb at 1:33, and returns to D minor at 1:42. There is a return to Eb at 2:18, followed by a shift to G minor at 2:28 and a final return to D minor at 2:38.

The Chicks | Long Time Gone

“Long Time Gone” was originally recorded by American singer/songwriter Darrell Scott, and subsequently covered by the Dixie Chicks (now known as The Chicks) and featured as the lead single on their 2002 album Home. The instrumentation includes banjo and fiddle but no percussion; critic Kevin John Coyne of Country Universe said the track “features the same empowered energy of their best hits…but with a sharper edge and a complete refusal to mince words as they slice and dice the contemporary country landscape that they still ruled at the time.” The Chicks’ cover won the Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.

The track begins in D and briefly modulates to E following the second verse and chorus at 1:42. It returns to D at 2:10.

Noisettes | Never Forget You

“The Brit pop trio’s bubbly soul ditty is, thanks to Shingai Shoniwa’s sweet crooning, reminiscent of an early Motown party groove,” said USA Today upon the release of “Never Forget You” in 2009. Written by all the members of this English band, the track reached #20 on the UK Singles Chart. It begins in D and, after a more subdued bridge in B minor, modulates up to E at 2:09.

Building Momentum (from “How To Dance In Ohio”)

Composer Jacob Yandura and lyricist/bookwriter Rebekah Greer Melocik adapted the 2015 HBO documentary How To Dance in Ohio into a musical of the same name, which premiered on Broadway late last year. The story follows a group of autistic teenagers as they prepare to attend their first spring formal. It was the first Broadway show to cast autistic characters with autistic actors. A UK production is planned for next year.

“Building Momentum” comes near the end of the show. It begins in Ab, shifts up to A at 1:04, and modulates again to Bb at 2:05.

Third Reprise | Somewhere That’s Green (from “Little Shop of Horrors” feat. Sarah Hyland + Andrew Barth Feldman)

Third Reprise, a band founded by Daniel Rudin to cover musical theatre showtunes, recently released a funk arrangement of “Somewhere That’s Green” from the 1986 musical Little Shop of Horrors by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman. “The key to Third Reprise’s early success,” the group’s website says, “has been pairing the virtuosic, luminous artistry of the best singers and instrumentalists in NYC with a highly specific body of songs that mean a lot to people, while never losing the joy and sense of humor that’s core to the concept of a musical theater cover band.”

Sarah Hyland and Andrew Barth Feldman are currently playing the leads in a revival of the show running Off-Broadway in New York. The track starts in C and shifts up to Eb for the second verse at 0:40. There is another modulation up a step to F at 1:32.

Take Me As I Am (from “Jekyll & Hyde”)

“Take Me As I Am” is from the 1990 Broadway musical Jekyll & Hyde, featuring a score by Frank Wildhord (music), Leslie Bricusse and Steve Cuden (lyrics). Wildhorn in particular is known for his ballads, most of which include a dramatic key change or two. This tune begins in Bb major and shifts up to B at 2:12.

Boney M. | Brown Girl in the Ring

“Brown Girl in the Ring” is a traditional Jamaican children’s song that became an international recognized when it was recorded by the Euro-Caribbean group Boney M. in 1978. The track was originally released as the B-side to “Rivers of Babylon,” (the group’s #1 hit at the time) but crept its way up the charts and spent nine weeks in the UK Top 10.

The disco and reggae-infused tune begins in Db and modulates up to D at 2:19.
