Lisa Stansfield | Little Bit of Heaven

Lisa Stansfield, the northern (UK) lass with a voice that belied her appearance, was (an) integral singer-songwriter storming the charts (in 1989) with her debut album Affection … Over the years, much has been made about Stansfield’s vocals not ‘matching’ her image, whatever that means,” (Albumism). “In reality, one only has to scratch the surface to see that ‘northern’ or ‘blue-eyed’ soul actually has a long standing history in the UK … (it) ultimately began in the ‘60s with British and North American singers like Timi Yuro, The Righteous Brothers, Dusty Springfield, Kiki Dee and of course the legendary Teena Marie. All of them drew inspiration from the sounds of Motown and R&B which heavily influenced their musical style and at times, even their vocals.

Lisa Stansfield was no different. Having spoken of the heavy musical influences throughout her childhood in Northern England with the likes of Barry White (with whom she would later go on to record), Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye and of course the Queen of Soul herself, Aretha Franklin, it was inevitable that these soulful influences would permeate throughout her music … Stansfield was—and still very much is—an originator and Affection, whilst clearly having been influenced by other artists and genres, is unequivocally one of the greatest original debuts to have ever been released.”

After starting in F# major, a downward half-step shift to F major hits at 2:30, just after the launch of an alto sax feature. But at 3:18, we return upward to the original key for the balance of the tune.

Mama’s Gun | Cheap Hotel

“Cheap Hotel (2014) is UK band Mama’s Gun third album,” (Soul&Jazz&Funk). “The Andy Platts-fronted outfit debuted with Routes To Riches and its pleasing, soul-slanted pop won underground acclaim, though the set went to 3 in the Japanese album charts! The band’s second LP, The Life And Soul, was (as the name might imply) a much more soulful affair and one of the tracks, ‘Pots Of Gold’ won the affection of real soul fans worldwide. For Cheap Hotel, the band … have reunited with their first producer – Julian Simmons (who’s recently worked with Ed Sheeran and the Guillemots) and not surprisingly the overall sound of the set reverts back to a poppier flavor, albeit a very classy kind of pop with, yes, a touch of soul still about it.

Group leader Platts, we’re told, has eclectic tastes. He cites Motown and funk as amongst his formative influences, but he admits to a huge passion for ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) — and it’s that Brummie based outfit’s sound that dominates Cheap Hotel … Dip in almost anywhere here and you’ll be reminded of ELO – maybe garnished with a hint of the Beatles or the sounds of a little gentleman called Prince, but it’s almost all that slick, polished ELO pop sound … Cheap Hotel is a great pop album with just a touch of soul about it.”

The title track begins like a particularly funky day on Sesame Street, complete with a hook doubled between whistles and a tinny toy xylophone. But after the verse starts at 0:18, occasional extra beats and a Prince-like high lead vocal on the chorus confirm that this isn’t a theme from a children’s TV show. At 0:53, the second verse brings an upward half-step key change, but at 1:09, the tonality deflates back to the original key. It’s tempting to wait for another key change at some point during the tune, but other than some quick shifts during an instrumental break (1:29 – 1:53), it never arrives!

Dusty Springfield | Just One Smile

“Despite its status as a classic record, Dusty in Memphis (1969) had less than auspicious beginnings,” (BBC). “By 1968, Springfield had scored a string of chart successes with what she called ‘big ballady things’ and her decision to make an album in Memphis, home of hard edged R’n’B grooves, was viewed with puzzlement by many.” The distance from Springfield’s native UK to Memphis was large, both in miles and in sonic difference.

“Teaming up with the crack production/arrangement team of Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd and Arif Mardin (responsible for Aretha Franklin’s Atlantic classics) also proved a bit much initially for Springfield, whose confidence in her vocal abilities was never very high … Springfield unsurprisingly resists any temptation to do an Aretha, instead relying on understatement, timing and delivery rather than vocal firepower. The songs (all by Brill building denizens) are all top notch, and Springfield’s interpretation of them is peerless … Mardin’s sensitive blend of Bacharach poise and Memphis funk provides the perfect frame for Dusty’s blue-eyed soul.”

Written by Randy Newman, “Just One Smile” was previously recorded by Gene Pitney. The tune starts in Eb minor, with plenty of harmonic sidesteps, a la the above mentioned Bachrachian influence. The tune then shifts to Bb major for the chorus (0:49 – 1:10) before reverting to the original key.

Hozier | All Things End

“All Things End” is featured on Irish singer Hozier’s third studio album, Unreal Earth, which was released last year. “Hozier doesn’t just succeed in exploring that dark emotional world,” Rolling Stone said in their review of the record. “His painful ascent makes the listener immediately want to climb with him. Even harder, he successfully delivers a third album that doesn’t shy away from any topic, even when he doesn’t have the answers.”

Hozier draws on folk, blues, and soul influences; his debut single “Take Me To Church” hit #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2013.

This song begins in A minor and shifts up a step to B minor at 2:41.

Hall + Oates | So Close

“Throughout their spectacular run of hit singles in the ’80s, Hall + Oates took full advantage of emerging technology, applying layers of synths and programmed rhythms to their rock/soul hybrid sound,” (Ultimate Classic Rock). “But by the end of the decade, they were ready for a change. That restlessness manifested itself on the duo’s 14th studio album, the suitably titled Change of Season … Although it happened to arrive in the midst of an acoustic boom helped along by the popular MTV Unplugged series, Hall + Oates insisted they were simply heading back to their roots after riding the crest of pop stardom as far as it could take them.

Yet if Change of Season … offered a measure of liberation from Hall + Oates’ pop-star past, it came with a price. After nearly 20 years of working side by side, the duo — only recently returned from a three-year mid-’80s hiatus — knew their days as a working recording act were coming to a close. ‘The essence of our working relationship hasn’t changed over the years. We collaborate the same way and for the same reasons,’ Oates told the Inquirer. ‘The only change has been with our personalities. A decade ago, we were wrapped up as Hall & Oates and our career. The individuality was defined as part of the group. You’ll see more solo projects from each of us in the future.'” The new albums indeed stopped; equally unfortunately, the touring did, too: the duo are now battling bitterly over their divergent views on the management of their shared publishing rights.

“So Close” opens in C major, with several verses and choruses leading to a bridge (3:13 – 3:57). Halfway through the bridge (3:37), there’s a whole-step shift up to D major as the sonic and lyrical energy builds: There’s a restless look in your eye tonight / there’s a secret hurt in my heart / and the dream that pulls us together, girl / is a dream that’s gonna tear us, tear us apart. Although the tune reached #11 on the pop charts, it was the duo’s last major hit. It was a great half-century-plus career while it lasted: Hall + Oates remain the most successful duo of all time, ahead of the Carpenters, the Everly Brothers, and Simon + Garfunkel (Billboard).

Dan Hartman | The Love In Your Eyes

“During the ’70s, Dan Hartman was a member of the Edgar Winter Group and was also in Johnny Winter’s band for a time,” (AllMusic). “Hartman was also a session musician who supported artists as diverse as Ian Hunter, Stevie Wonder, Todd Rundgren, and Ronnie Montrose. After releasing one undistinguished solo pop/rock album in 1976, he hit the big time with the fine disco album, Instant Replay,” which featured a hit single of the same name.

“Its follow-up, Relight My Fire, wasn’t as successful and Hartman retreated to the studio, producing .38 Special, the Average White Band, and James Brown; he (wrote and) was behind the board for Brown’s comeback (and final) hit, “Living in America,” in 1986. Hartman had one more hit in 1985 with the pop-soul “I Can Dream About You.” Again, his follow-ups weren’t successful and he returned to producing. He was preparing a new album at the time of his death in March of 1994.” Hartman had lived with HIV for several years when he passed away.

Certainly, Hartman’s was an iceberg of a career: it seems that only the top fraction was visible, with the rest of his work submerged beneath the surface as he worked with other artists. Neil Sedaka, a friend and a one-time neighbor, spoke of Hartman after his passing: “I loved working with him. He played, sang, wrote, mixed, mastered … he did it all!” (DanHartman.com). “I would call him a genius. I think of him often and smile!”

“The Love In Your Eyes,” one of Hartman’s final singles released posthumously on 1995’s Keep the Fire Burnin’, starts in D minor. At 0:55, the chorus shifts to Eb major. The pattern continues from there, other than a brief bridge which provides additional variety from 2:50-3:12. Hartman’s material was known for varied textures and complex grooves, but this track features a broader harmonic vocabulary than most. Hartman’s writing, phrasing, and string-embellished arrangement on this track often conjure up a tenor version of soul legend Barry White. “Wrapped in warm romance, [the] tune has a retro-soul quality (Billboard) … it shows that he was still among the best writers and producers in pop music.”

Hall + Oates | She’s Gone

In an interview with American Songwriter, John Oates, songwriter/guitarist/vocalist for Hall and Oates, spoke about “She’s Gone,” from the band’s 1973 album Abandoned Luncheonette (re-released to larger acclaim in 1976): “I don’t know if it’s the best song we’ve ever written, but it’s certainly one of the most enduring songs. I think it’s a song that is certainly emblematic of our collaborative relationship … We knew it was a good song. We knew it was unique. But really that song – don’t confuse that song with the record. The song was the thing that happened in our living room with him on the piano and me on the acoustic guitar. The record is what happened when we went into Atlantic studios with the legendary producer, Arif Mardin, and this incredible collection of musicians who he surrounded us with and his string arrangement and the chemistry. I call it the perfect storm of creativity. It turned that song into a classic record that has really stood the test.”

From Songfacts: “This is one of the duo’s favorite Hall & Oates songs. Daryl Hall told Entertainment Weekly: ‘It’s very autobiographical. What we wrote about was real, even though it was two different situations. And it’s very thematic with us: this soaring melody and uplifting chord progression, but about a very sad thing.'” In Songfacts‘ 2011 interview with John Oates, he explained: “‘We started out as songwriters. And both Daryl and myself, individually and collectively, have a wide variety of musical tastes. Just because the music we made may have fallen into a certain category doesn’t mean we weren’t aware of and interested in other kinds of music. When Hall & Oates got together, I brought a traditional American folk-y approach, and it was something Daryl wasn’t really even aware of. And Daryl brought a lot more of the urban R&B side. And when we blended those together, we eventually created a sound.'”

In what might be a high water mark for the duo’s vocals, lead vocal duties are shared and harmonies alternate with octave unisons. Although the single peaked at only #7 on the Billboard Hot 100, it also placed in the top 10 on the Canada Top Singles chart and both the US and Canadian Adult Contemporary charts. It only reached #93 on the US R&B chart. Though the duo’s unprecedented run of early-80s hits almost entirely arose from the pop genre, this earlier outing was textbook blue-eyed soul. Between 4:08 – 4:34, a late instrumental bridge brings three half-step modulations, ushered in with a IV/V compound chord in each new key.

The Dukes of September | Who’s That Lady (live)

The Isley Brothers recorded “That Lady” twice. Songwriters Ronald, O’Kelly, and Rudolph Isley, the original family trio, released the first version in 1964.

Besides the sweet vocals, the prominent features of the song are the insistent cowbell (!), and the supporting horn riff towards the end.

But it was the Isleys’ 1973 version that made the song famous (Billboard #6 that year). By then, younger brother Ernie Isley had joined the group, and it’s his fuzzed-out guitar that’s the hook in that version. For that release, the lyrics were embellished, and the superior recording quality reflects the improved technology of the day. Neither of the Isleys’ versions featured a key change, however!

Donald Fagen (of Steely Dan), Michael McDonald (of the Doobie Brothers), and Boz Scaggs toured as The Dukes of September from 2010 to 2012, playing hits from their own bands and some of their own favorites, like the song here. Guitarist Jon Herington, who had recorded and toured with Steely Dan, manages to capture the flavor of Ernie Isley’s solo in this performance at Lincoln Center in 2012.

In the Dukes’ version, there’s a half-step modulation at 2:36 — although this shift seems bigger due to an interruption of the groove, some unexpected kicks, and flourishes from the horn section.

Simply Red | Enough

Sweetwater.com defines sophisti-pop as “the 80s’ most elegant genre … combining pop sensibilities with refined arrangements that were inspired by jazz, avant-garde classical music, and soul … looking simultaneously to the past and the future.”

Mick Hucknall, frontman for UK band Simply Red, fits the genre well: ” … in love with ‘60s soul, which he gives a high-tech overhaul and an ‘80s pop gloss,” (LA Times, reviewing the 1989 album A New Flame). “Refracted through the Hucknall filter, some of the hard-core earthiness of the style doesn’t survive. Hucknall has created a hybrid that’s laid-back and maybe just a little too slick — but still teeming with understated passion … Most of the album’s music is dreamily romantic and fairly mellow. One of the best songs is “Enough,” which reflects the fragile, wispy style of Marvin Gaye’s great What’s Going On album.”

As an album closer and a non-single, “Enough” was granted plenty of freedom. The percolating bassline and syncopated keyboard kicks of the verse, starting in C minor, open into a more uncomplicated chorus in Ab major (0:54); the cycle repeats at 1:12. At 2:25, a bridge appears (or second chorus, as we hear it more than once?), with its lead vocal featuring only a few emphatically repeated words (the title among them). At 2:43, an instrumental verse and chorus are home to piano and guitar features, followed by an outro featuring a lithe soprano sax at 4:21; all set a tone which wouldn’t be out of place at a jazz club, yet also for a time had a place on the pop charts.

Todd Rundgren | Izzat Love?

“In interviews, he has attributed the radical shift in his mid-20s less to his own changing perspective than to other people’s perspective on him—he got tired of being seen as merely another piano-playing, lovesick troubadour,” (Pitchfork). “While he still stands by the folk-pop simplicity of his earliest solo records, Rundgren is quick to note their lack of depth, citing their obvious reference points (thematically, a high-school break-up; musically, the work of Laura Nyro). After achieving commercial success on his 1970 debut with the slick single ‘We Gotta Get You a Woman’ and critical success a year later with his moodier sophomore album, Rundgren sought to expand his range. And he wanted to do it by himself.

Throughout (the 70s), Rundgren was one of the first prominent artist-slash-producers, as competent behind the scenes as he was in front of the microphone, earning him the admiration of a young Prince and, later, Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker. As he discovered his own identity on record, Rundgren was hellbent on learning what happens when those two roles converge. When everything about a record is fully under the artist’s control, he suspected, the product can become something singular.”

Todd (1974) featured the single “A Dream Goes on Forever” and “I Think You Know,” ballads which are at the very heart of Rundgren’s catalog for most fans. However, much of the rest of album is comprised of shorter tracks which form a dense audio collage, including “Izzat Love.” In some ways, the track is right down the fairway when considering Rundgren’s younger years marinating in Philly Soul; with a slower tempo and more relaxed arrangement, the track might have been a hit. But instead, a frenetic feel and relentlessly uptempo rock delivery ruled the day, shifting up a whole step at 1:08. Be forewarned: the loud connective tissue to the next album track, “Heavy Metal Kids” (apparently the sound of analog recording tape being suddenly rewound) is inextricably included at 1:52.
