Sharon Shannon | Bag of Cats

MotD regular JB adds: “Irish dance tunes are often played in sets of two or three tunes, where each tune is in a different key.  Because each tune is distinct, however, these mixed-key sets don’t really qualify as modulations. This tune has a very similar feel to a mixed-key set, but because it was composed as a single tune, the mods are fair game.”

Starting in D major, “Bag of Cats” (1997) by Shannon’s Big Band shifts nearly seamlessly to A minor at 1:07, A major at 2:43, then finally E major after a measure’s pause (3:47).

Hozier | All Things End

“All Things End” is featured on Irish singer Hozier’s third studio album, Unreal Earth, which was released last year. “Hozier doesn’t just succeed in exploring that dark emotional world,” Rolling Stone said in their review of the record. “His painful ascent makes the listener immediately want to climb with him. Even harder, he successfully delivers a third album that doesn’t shy away from any topic, even when he doesn’t have the answers.”

Hozier draws on folk, blues, and soul influences; his debut single “Take Me To Church” hit #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2013.

This song begins in A minor and shifts up a step to B minor at 2:41.

Enya | Exile

“Perhaps much of the derision directed at (Enya’s 1988 release) Watermark over the years has come thanks to the millstone around its neck – the entirely un-representative ‘Orinocho Flow’, with its icily plinking keys and lyrics ‘from the North to the South, Ebudæ into Khartoum / from the deep sea of Clouds to the island of the moon,'” (Quietus) “… For all its hundreds of thousands of sales, and the Top Of The Pops performance that made them, that track distracts from the quiet, clever grace of much of the rest of the album, which recalls traditional Celtic folk, sacred early music and world music – which, let us not forget, was then held in its stuffy, separate ghetto. To label and denigrate this as new age is lazy too – Enya herself dismissed the term as ‘marketing.’

… While a record with clear Celtic origins and Enya always proud of her roots, there’s no misty-eyed evoking of some shamrock ‘n’ leprechaun ‘auld country’ here, with songs delivered in English, Irish and Latin … ‘Exile’ (is a) gorgeous hymnal … gliding downstream on flute and organ drones.” On the negative side is ” … overproduction, with sometimes just a little too much 80s gloss and sheen on the strings and Enya’s vocals. Yet, essentially, Watermark is a deeply weird album in the context of its bright and garish era, and as well as that a strongly and confidently female album. It also stands out as a record inspired by spiritual music in a mainstream pop world that has in recent years chosen to end the centuries-old musical dialogue between the secular and religious, the sacred and profane.”

“Exile” begins in Db minor; after two verses, a chorus arrives (1:17) with a shift to Db major before a return to the original key for the next verse at 1:49. The alternating pattern continues from there.

Westlife | You Raise Me Up

“You Raise Me Up,” written by Rolf Løvland and Brendan Graham, was initially recorded by the Irish-Norwegian band Secret Garden with vocalist Brian Kennedy. Josh Groban’s 2004 cover brought much wider recognition to the song, and the following year the Irish pop group Westlife released it as the lead single for their album Face to Face; it has since become the eighth most-streamed song of all time in Ireland.

Beginning in Eb, there is a modulation up to F at 1:19 and another to Gb at 2:30.

Van Morrison | You Don’t Know Me

Van Morrison’s cover of “You Don’t Know Me” was featured on his twenty-third studio album, Days Like This, released in 1995. His daughter, Shana Morrison, joins as a guest artist on the track.

The Boys of the Lough | That Night in Bethlehem

The Boys of the Lough, a Scottish/Irish group specializing in Celtic music, released their first album in 1972. “That Night in Bethlehem” is included on their 1996 album, Midwinter Night’s Dream. The vocal verses are set in D minor, separated by instrumental interludes in A minor.

Westlife | My Love

“My Love” is the the Irish boy band Westlife’s most viewed song on Youtube, currently sitting at 304 million views. The track, which was the second single released from the group’s 2000 album Coast to Coast, was Westlife’s seventh consecutive #1 hit, tying a record originally set by The Beatles. It debuted at #1 on the UK Singles chart and won Record of the Year. There is a modulation from C up to D for the final chorus at 3:11.

Thin Lizzy | Do Anything You Want to Do

“If you want to see the platonic ideal of a rock band, go to YouTube and search ‘Thin Lizzy Rainbow 1978’,” (The Guardian) ” You’ll find the band’s classic lineup … in full flight, and even the degradation of old dubbed recordings can’t diminish their power. Gorham and Robertson flank Lynott, the trio in motion, the two guitarists criss-crossing and taking to the monitors, Lynott in the centre, bass held high, a beautiful, heavy-lidded man half seducing his audience and half assaulting it.”

The Irish rock band is probably best known for their 1976 release “The Boys are Back in Town,” which was a top 10 hit in the UK, Ireland, and the US; it placed 272 on the 2021 edition of Rolling Stone’s500 Greatest Songs of All Time” list.

1979’s “Do Anything You Want to Do,” from the album Black Rose: A Rock Legend, reached #25 on the Irish charts and #14 in the UK. The tune starts in a de-tuned G major, shifts to Bb major at 1:37, then alternates again between the two keys.

The Nolans | I’m in the Mood for Dancing

“I’m in the Mood for Dancing” was released as a single by the Irish pop group The Nolan Sisters (later known as The Nolans) in 1979, and featured on their debut album that year. The track reached the #3 spot on the UK Singles in 1980, and is the most successful song the group ever recorded (it was so successful in Japan that they recorded the tune again in Japanese.) The tune modulates at 1:38, and returns to the original key at 2:15.
